Whitby Castle / Rye Golf Club
The Chapman family built Whitby Castle in 1853. The Park family (Park & Tilford) held it next. In 1921 forty acres plus an adjoining estate became the Rye Country Club. The club failed in the Depression. Rye voters bought the property in 1964; the city took it in 1965 as the public golf club. Nearby streets sit on the acres that were not kept for the course.
Whitby is now a restaurant inside the municipal club. The house lot pattern around Oakland Beach and Rye Beach is the other half of that shore estate belt.
