Greenacres / Scarsdale Estates

Greenacres was laid out by Scarsdale Estates starting in 1908–09 under Robert E. Farley. The company had taken over Welcome G. Hitchcock's local holdings after his 1897 failure. Farley pulled together the McCabe farm, the Carr tract, the Barney tract, and the Reed tract so the company held the land south of White Plains between the Post Road, Fenimore Road, and the railroad.

The Inquirer said the ingredients were 'a stretch of wild, unsightly land, a barn, and a dilapidated house.' The old Leggo house became the Greenacres Tea House. Farley cleaned the scummed lake, pulled down the lithograph shack, and built the Italian gardens. The first Greenacres map was filed in 1909. Farley named streets for his secretary (Kingston), his mother's pen name (Gilmore), and his wife's maiden name (Colvin). Greenacres School opened in 1917. By 1928 the section had about 700 houses.
