Ardsley (Cyrus Field estate)
Cyrus Field — the Atlantic cable — bought what he called Ardsley in 1869. The estate ran from South Broadway past the Saw Mill to Sprain Brook and covered much of today's Village of Ardsley plus Irvington's Ardsley Park. Field built houses for himself and each of his seven children. Heirs sold the Woodland Lake acres; Morgan sold 212 acres to New York State in 1923. Those woods are now Irvington Woods and V. Everit Macy Park. The house lots are what was left.
The 1870 gate lodge still stands at South Broadway and Osceola as a private house. Field's own house, The Homestead, burned around 1978. Ardsley Avenue, Harriman Road, and the park-edge streets in Irvington sit on this cut-down holding. The Village of Ardsley took the estate's name.
